They Burned Our Church, But Not Our Spirit

June 14, 2024

The embers of St. Jude’s were still smoldering when Pastor Emmanuel gathered his congregation beneath the branches of a grand mahogany tree. It was the third time their place of worship had been targeted in Benue State. Yet, as the morning sun broke through the dust, a quiet hymn rose from the clearing.

In Northern Nigeria, Christian communities face an existential trial. Entire villages are routinely displaced, with families forced to flee with nothing but the clothes on their backs. For Pastor Emmanuel’s flock, the loss of their sanctuary was an assault on their heritage and community anchor.

When the attackers came, we lost everything — our building, our Bibles, our sense of safety. But we never lost our faith.

— Pastor Emmanuel Okafor
